Stay long enough to learn its tides.","essay":["Ōhope is two shores on one strip of sand. On the ocean side, 11 km of beach runs from West End, under the escarpment, to the entrance of Ōhiwa Harbour. On the inside, the harbour covers about 26 km² of shallows, islands and tidal flats, slowly filling with sediment. Between them sits the Ōhope Spit and a town of about 3,000 people with a median age of 55.7. Hardly anyone lived on the spit until the late 1950s, when the Harbour Board built the Port Ōhope wharf in 1957 and sold sections on the dunes to pay for it.","Sand that young does not stay put. Across the channel, the Ōhiwa Spit lost a whole settlement by 1915 and 56 m of foreshore in a single year, 1978. On the Ōhope side the council reported about 25 m of dune retreat over 15 to 20 years before it started rebuilding the stormwater soakage in 2020. The escarpment above West End has had at least 49 landslides in 70 years, and the cliff track to Ōtarawairere Bay has been shut since October 2022. In April 2026 Cyclone Vaianu brought a State of Local Emergency and a mandatory evacuation of every home at West End. The tourism office's 2026 line is that Ōhope hasn't changed. The dunes, the track and the council's own climate risk assessment say otherwise.","The practical answer is to stay longer. Ōhope runs on two tides a day, on oyster season from May to November, on the godwits that arrive in spring, on kiwi walks in winter and on daily surf patrols only in high summer. A weekend sees the beach. A month learns when the harbour flats are walkable, which end of the beach is working, and which neighbour has the boat.
